Old man . Barcelona Zoo’s much-loved albino gorilla, Copito de Nieve (Snow Flake), has lost his battle with skin cancer. Copito lived at the zoo since he was found in Guinea in 1966.

Snowflake, an extremely rare albino gorilla and the most popular resident of the Barcelona Zoo, has died of skin cancer, zoo officials said.

The white gorilla’s health had been deteriorating in recent days, and he was taken out of his public exhibition space on Wednesday, news reports said.

Snowflake – Copito de Nieve in Spanish – was taken to the zoo’s veterinary department for an autopsy.

Copito was thought to be between 38 and 40 years old – the equivalent of 80 human years for gorillas, whose average life span in the wild is 25 years.

In his 37 years at the Barcelona Zoo, he fathered 22 offspring with three different females. None is albino.

He was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2001, but the disease progressed rapidly in recent months and could not be controlled by veterinarians.

The gorilla’s wrinkly white face is on postcards all over the city. He was a main character in a novel and even had memoirs written in his name.
